The Jacksonville Metro area of Florida state has seen industry wages shoot up by 21.6% from 2001 to 2006. This five-year wage growth has surpassed the Florida-wide increase in industry wages, and even that of the whole of the United States.

The average annual industry wages (as of the 2 nd quarter of 2006) of the Jacksonville Metro area stood at $37,307 – higher than the $36,487 in average annual industry wages of the state but lower than the $40,259 posted by the country during the same period.

The period starting 2001 and ending 2006 also saw employment fall in the Jacksonville Metro area, with most of the job losses experienced in the Business Support services sector, to the tune of 1,963 jobs. This is equivalent to 38.2% of the loss of employment throughout Jacksonville. The Grocery Store sector followed suit with 1,577 jobs lost. Printing and Related Support Activities lost 664 jobs while employment at Gasoline Stations declined by 444 jobs. Rounding off the top five industries based on job loss was Other Furniture Related Product Manufacturing with 185 jobs lost. Sixteen of the 23 4-digit industries lost jobs during this period (only 7 industries posted increases in jobs.)

However, the total number of jobs for all industries in the Jacksonville Metro area rose by 44,762 jobs during the same five-year period. The Building Equipment Contractors sector generated the highest increase in employment among the 4-digit NAICS industries, at 4,015 additional jobs in that time. This is equivalent to 24.5% of total employment for Jacksonville alone. Offices of Physicians came next with 3,550 new jobs, followed by Building Finishing Contracts with 2,545 additional jobs. Legal Services came in fifth with 1,192 new jobs.

Employment lost from the 2 nd quarter of 2001 to the 2 nd quarter of 2006 in the Jacksonville Metro area was largely attributed to the Other Furniture Related Product Manufacturing Sector, which lost 59.7% of its jobs during that period. This statistic is significantly more than the 14% in losses of the same industry sector for Florida state as a whole and the 7.7% of losses for that job sector throughout the United States. Other industries which also experienced job loss in the same time period are: Motor Vehicle Body and Trailer Manufacturing (50.1% decrease), Printing and Related Support Activities (31.2% decrease), Business Support Services (29.1% decrease), and Grocery Stores (11.1% decrease.)
