Bank Teller Job Description

Bank tellers do routine and daily bank transactions directly interacting with customers of a bank or other financial institution where individuals maintain currency accounts.  These job positions are the first and main representative contacts a banking customer has with their banking institution.  These employees are critical to the ongoing, effective and legal bank processing of transactions. They help prevent excessive bank losses from occurring through the fraudulent passing of checks and counterfeit currency.

Education, Skills, Responsibilities and Functions

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required for entry level bank teller positions college degrees necessary for upper level banker positions.
  • An Associates or Bachelor’s degree in commerce including classes in accounting, finance, book keeping or economics will give an applicant preferential selection for this job position and allow for fast advancement opportunities.
  • Clerical, administrative, cash handling, sales and/or customer service experience is preferred but not always required as banks normally maintain intensive and comprehensive training programs.
  • The ability to pass a thorough criminal background check and be bondable is essential for this position.
  • Proficiency in the operation of computers, including experience with financial, transactional, data entry and office suite applications is required.
  • Bank tellers being directly responsible for complex and varied customer transactions involving sometimes large sums of cash, including check cashing, savings deposits, withdrawals etc, must be highly accurate and responsible individuals. 
  • Bank tellers must be able to accurately fill-out and issue negotiable document such as cashier’s checks, traveler’s checks, money orders, drafts, etc.
  • Promotion and the ordering of bank products and services such as certificates of deposit (CDs), credit cards, trust accounts, insurance services, business banking services, loans, mortgages, etc. are required of a bank teller.
  • Superior customer service discipline and patience is crucial for a bank teller as they are dealing with the general public on a regular basis in the area of sensitive financial transactions.
  • The ability to solve financial inaccuracies for clients and investigate account discrepancies and conflicts is a major challenge for bank tellers. Once again, patient and kind people skills are immeasurably important in these situations.
  • Excellent counting and math skills are important as accurate and careful accounting of their drawer balances is crucial.
  • Excellent communicative and listening skills are required of this position as the accurate dissemination of information is crucial in the financial services field.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail are required as the transactions of a bank teller are critical to profit and loss of the bank and the finances of the bank's clients.
  • Honesty and integrity are obviously extremely important in any banking field as customer confidence and trust are irreplaceable in the financial services sector.
  • The ability to work under pressure in the face of an irate client who is unhappy about a bad monetary transaction is crucial.
