Fashion Industry- General
The fashion industry can be a glamorous and elegant industry with employment offering a wide range of job tasks from fashion designer, fashion photographer, fashion buyer, to fashion model and public relations fashion employee.
A job in the fashion industry encompasses much more than simply considering clothing as a means to cover the body, but rather, the anticipated career employee in the fashion industry must understand that clothing provides identity and promotes self-confidence for the customers who will eventually wear their fashions. Clothes can also be considered a form of artistic expression and help to promote a form of, shall we say, stylistic body art around the world. The general psychological well-being and feeling of well-being a person carries in his or her daily activities can be hugely affected by the type and design of the clothes they wear. The clothes chosen by driven business professionals and those engaged in such high power areas as the New York financial world can actually help determine their success or failure in their highly competitive field of choice. In the case of celebrities, their entire career may be affected by the wearing of the right dress at a movie premier or award ceremony.
While it may seem that most jobs in the fashion industry are exclusive to such mega fashion locations as Paris and New York, the reality is there are many opportunities for less esoteric areas of fashion design such as children's cloths, sportswear and swimsuits or general clothing worn by the masses. Actually, fashion is not only reserved for the few and privileged socialites or movie stars but also for those shopping at their local Wal-Mart or Target store. The general trends in fashion change from year to year and the entire spectrum of clothing must continue to grow and remain competitive with the new trends.
More specifically, as a job as a fashion designer, some of the tasks required may include the following: Research studies on trends in fashion and keeping up on the latest and most desirable styles from various regions of the world, attend fashion shows in various worldwide locations, maintain knowledge of fashion history, choose material appropriate for your designs, create sample sketches of your designs, become involved in the marketing of your designs, work with and supervise the performance of fellow design team members and generally perform routine business administration duties.
Whatever the area of interest in the fashion industry, you must be willing to remain on the cutting edge of the fashion world and embrace change and art. You are part of something much bigger, an area of work where an individual's career may be on the line, a world where your work may contribute to worldwide trends and the evolution of the fashion industry.
