Health Care Industry- General

The ever growing field of healthcare is without a doubt an opportunity-filled career choice.  With the baby boomer generation reaching their senior years, the need for new and varied health care providers and general health care industry professionals is greater than ever.

The titles and jobs in this field are numerous and varied ranging from the medical transcriber to imaging technician, nurse to full doctors and surgeons. 
Education levels for these jobs are demanding with most levels requiring at least a bachelor's degree or higher, all the way up to a PHD for doctors, psychiatrists and surgeons. 

Some of the less educationally demanding positions would include but not limited to medical transcriber, massages therapist, caregiver and physical therapist.  But in general, if you are pursuing a job in the health care industry, you will be looking at many years of schooling, training, certification and in-house residency requirements. 

Because the health care field is such an important industry, we are going to quickly cover several of the jobs available in the industry in our listing below.  While this list is not entirely inclusive, and additional general administrative, computer and technical positions may be covered in other areas of this website, this list is a good starting point.

Accounting Manager:  Manages the accounting tasks within the fiscal department of a hospital, clinic, doctor's office or other medical establishment.  This positions responsibility includes but is not limited to the preparation of financial statements, maintaining general accounting systems, salaries and supervises support staff in the medical institution's financial department. Sometimes this individual may be responsible for budget, setting loan rates, and reimbursement procedures. The accounting manager of larger institutions will normally report to the controller.  This position is highly responsible and requires a higher level accounting degree and several years experience.

Admitting Director/Manager:  This individual performs typical director duties coordinating tasks in relation to the admission of patients to the hospital or other large medical institutions. Develops and implements related policies and procedures; prepares related reports and may directly or indirectly supervise additional admitting personnel. The responsibilities of this position may Includes control functions for proper patient loading and scheduling of an institution's beds.

Anesthesia Manager: Effectively coordinates anesthesia care for a hospital or medical institution. Establishes goals and objectives for the department and communicates them to staff and employees. Monitors and helps to ensure regular department compliance with established personnel policies. Forming and streamlining an anesthesia department's budgetary requirements may also be a regular duty of this position. In some cases, given the situation, this position may be filled by a administrative, non-clinical individual or a CRNA. Effective and clear written and vocal communicative skills are a must as these individuals share and convey important anesthesia-related information regularly with physicians, patients, management, as well as the public.

Business Office Manager: This individual focuses on the coordination and planning and directing of the general office business activities and routine administrative tasks. As applied to a hospital or medical clinic, these individual's activities include the coordination of patient accounts, patient billing procedures, and arranging credit for individuals who have a difficulty paying medical bills, and coordinating insurance plan billing and payments.  In certain situations these job positions may monitor overall institutional budgets as well as handling the admittance of individuals to health facilities.

Cancer Treatment Center, Department Head: This is a specialized position related to cancer treatment facilities.  This position is responsible for the effective direction of staff in providing various services for patients such as radiation therapy, medical oncology services and other types of mainstream and alternative cancer treatment methodologies. In many instances, this individual monitors, analyses and prepares the overall cancer center's budget. They may also be called upon to assist human resource managers in the hiring, firing and evaluation of the cancer center staff.

Chemical Dependency Director Manager: Directs delivery of services for all program activities, present and future, within the behavioral health services division. This includes planning, development, implementation and coordination of program components as well as policy, procedure and budget considerations.

Community Relations Director/Manager: This individual is responsible for the perception of the medical institution in the eyes of the community and for building positive ties along with developing and coordinating community outreach programs, health fairs, facility open houses and other important events and dedication ceremonies of new hospital wings and such. The coordination of special community relations activities, that promote public acknowledgment and generally enhance the hospital overall image are also responsibility of this position. identifying and applying for membership in community groups such as the chamber of commerce and charitable organizations are additional duties.

Employee Health Nurse/Coordinator (Internal): Hospitals and large health care institutions are concerned about their employee's health, especially when it comes to communicable disease.  This concern is highly justified as the staff must not become an additional source of illness to the facilities patients.  These workers perform the important task of implementing and coordinating the health institution's employee health wellness needs. This job screens employees for health conditions in relation to their job duty and determines timetable and worthiness for return to work. These job positions duties also include establishing metrics for analysis and follow-up services in regards to the hospital's employees that may have been exposed to communicable diseases in the course of their duties as healthcare providers. Drug and alcohol testing protocols are established and testing for the blood and urine samples is routinely the responsibility of this job position.  Additional related duties include the referral of employees with counseling and crisis intervention needs to the employee assistance program department. Departmental budgetary responsibilities may also be a requirement of this position.
