Statistics show that combined industry wages for the metro region of San Antonio, Texas have generally risen to reach 20.1% for the years 2001 to 2006. This is much higher than the wage increase for Texas state itself, and is also considerably more than the increase in average industry wages for the country.
However, average annual industry wages (as of 2nd Quarter of 2006) for San Antonio Metro Area still lagged behind the average annual industry wages of Texas, and that of the USA. The Unclassified job sector in the San Antonio Metro Area has posted the highest percentage of job growth – 248.1% - for the recent five year period (2nd Quarter 2001 to 2nd Quarter 2006.) This same job sector, when viewed operating throughout the state of Texas, only produced a 222.1%; the industry (on a countrywide scale) just posted 1.7% in job growth.
Building Materials and Supplies Dealers followed the Unclassified job sector as one of the five leading industries by producing an increase of 44.7%. Electronic Instrument Manufacturing comes next with a job gain of 34.6%. Then there is Nonscheduled Air Transportation that showed a 32.9% job gain. Trailing the pack is Services to Buildings and Dwellings with a 30.7% increase in employment.
Out of the overall increase in jobs in San Antonio, TX, forty-two point four percent (42.4%) is attributed to the Limited-service Eating Places job sector. This industry produced 5,026 new jobs from 2001 to 2006. Services to Buildings and Dwellings followed suit with 2,767 new jobs. The third leading industry as far as employment growth is concerned is Building Material and Supplies Dealer with an increase of 2,082 jobs.
Job losses were also felt for the period 2001 to 2006, with Scheduled Air Transportation accounting for the highest - a combined loss of 1,435 jobs. This number was equivalent to 77.6% of job losses for the period in San Antonio, Texas alone. Lawn and Garden Equipment and Supplies Stores had the second-highest job losses (324 jobs). The three industries which also had significant job losses were: Other Chemical Product and Preparation Manufacturing (89 jobs), Nursing Care Facilities (76 jobs), and Other General Merchandise Stores (75 jobs.)
Still, from the 2nd Quarter 2001 to the 2nd Quarter 2006, the San Antonio, Texas metro area experienced an increase in aggregate employment for all industry sectors equal to 43,562 jobs.
